Aero Wing Sail: Concept phase successfully completed

Rondal has successfully completed the concept phase of the Aero Wing Sail, an innovative, zero-emission wind propulsor designed specifically for the superyacht industry. With the Aero Wing Sail, Rondal delivers a user-friendly, aesthetically refined solution that harnesses the power of wind.

The Aero Wing Sail is tailored to the yacht-building sector, multihulls (24-40 m LOA) and motoryachts (> 40 m LOA) in both semi-series and custom builds. The product is available in six different spans (20 m, 25 m, 30 m, 35 m, 40 m, and 45 m) to accommodate a wide range of yacht sizes, with customization possible in designated areas.

CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGY

The Aero Wing Sail features a highly efficient wing design, delivering an exceptional lift coefficient and lift-to-drag ratio. Key system benefits include:

  • Automatic trim that ensures optimal performance and fuel savings, prevents overload, and enhances onboard comfort.
  • Automatic feathering that allows the wing to remain upright even at anchor or in harbor, without causing heel, unwanted thrust, or discomfort.
  • Tilting system which is designed for extreme weather conditions.

At its core, the Aero Wing Sail consists of a lightweight composite wing structure with a two-element airfoil (main element plus flap) and multiple flaps along the span for optimal aerodynamic control. The system is unstayed, capable of infinite rotation, and operated by an advanced automatic control system.

MARKET POTENTIAL AND FUTURE PROSPECTS

With the Aero Wing Sail, Rondal is capitalizing on the growing demand for wind-assisted propulsion in the yachting industry. The potential for wind propulsion is expanding, driven by regulations and initiatives such as FuelEU, the SEA Index, and the YETI scoring model. This shift presents a significant opportunity for cutting-edge wind propulsion solutions like the Aero Wing Sail.

WHAT’S NEXT?

With the concept phase completed, Rondal has now moved into full-scale development, focusing on obtaining Lloyd's Register Approval-in-Principle, as well as structural and mechanical system design. The Aero Wing Sail introduces a new approach to wind-assisted propulsion in the superyacht industry, offering a more sustainable and efficient alternative.
